Milestones: Key dates of ExxonMobil's history in Singapore
1893 to 1960s
- 1893 - Vacuum Oil sets up a trading post at Robinson Quay next to the Singapore River
- 1906 - The Mei Foo kerosene lamp is introduced
- 1911 - Standard Oil opens an office on the fifth floor of Union Building at Collyer Quay
- 1918 - First bunker storage terminal built on Pulau Sebarok
- 1931 - Vacuum Oil merges with the Standard Oil Company of New York (Socony) to form Standard-Vacuum Oil Company, or Stanvac
- 1949 - Stanvac starts to retail gasoline at service stations, with the first station at Outram Road. It also expands into aviation supply business at Kallang Airport
- 1961 - Bottled gas introduced under the Stangas brand name
- 1962 - Stanvac's operations in split, and the Esso oval logo appears for first time at service stations. Stangas becomes Essogas
- 1963 - Mobil decides to go into refining business. Esso starts a chemical operations department which later became Exxon Chemical Singapore Pte. Ltd.
- 1964 - First Mobil service station opens at Pasir Panjang
- 1965 - The Esso Tiger makes its debut
- 1966 - Mobil opens Singapore's first refinery at Pioneer Road in Jurong
- 1968 - Esso announces it will build its refinery
1970s
- 1970 - Esso's refinery at Pulau Ayer Chawan becomes operational
- 1971 - Mobil in Singapore becomes Mobil Oil Singapore Pte. Ltd.
- 1973 - Esso invests US$144 million in a lubricants plant
- 1974 - Mobil introduces the first synthesised motor oil in this part of the world
- 1976 - Mobil Singapore becomes the first and sole sponsor of the first Festival of Arts in Singapore
1980s
- 1984 - Esso is named Patron of the Arts for its contribution to cultural activities in Singapore
- 1985 - The first Mobil Marathon is launched
- 1986 - Esso introduces the convenience store concept to Singapore through the first service station with a mini-mart at West Coast Road
- 1987 - Mobil introduces unleaded petrol
- 1988 - Mobil card is introduced
- 1989 - Esso's station at West Coast Road becomes the first service station to offer fresh food, such as hot pastries. The Esso Card is introduced
1990s
- 1991 - Esso introduces two grades of unleaded petrol, 98-octance Esso Supreme & 92 Esso Extra Unleaded
- 1993 - Esso's convenience stores get a new name: Tiger Mart. Exxon Chemical signs MOU to build US$1 aromatics joint venture plant
- 1994 - Mobil completes its US$1.1 billion continuous catalytic reformer and aromatics unit
- 1997 - Mobil completes US$250 million lubricant baseoil plant. Refining capacity at Pioneer Road facility raised to 300,000 bpd
- 1998 - Exxon Corporation and Mobil Corporation announces merger decision
- 1999 - Official merger of Exxon and Mobil to form Exxon Mobil Corporation
2000s
- 2001 - ExxonMobil Chemical opens US$2 billion Singapore Chemical Plant. Speedpass outdoor payment technology introduced at Mobil stations
- 2002 - Introduction of Smiles customer loyalty programme which allows cross acceptance of cards at both Esso and Mobil stations
- 2003 - Speedpass extended to Esso stations
- 2004 - Opening of ExxonMobil-NTUC FairPrice Pilot Alliance sites
- 2005 - Expansion of ExxonMobil Chemical's steam cracker and oxo alcohol plant capacity announced
- 2006 - FairPrice Xpress & Cheers stores open at ExxonMobil's service stations
- 2007 - Groundbreaking of second world-scale petrochemical project. All service stations converted to Esso brand
- 2008 - Dormitories and Safety Training and Security Centre for second world-scale petrochemical project completed
