Let's Pedal Challenge

November 9, 2008
As part of the annual Responsible Care Awards nomination process, Chemical Manufacturing and Public Affairs organised and sponsored a large-scale Community Relations and Environmental Awareness event on November 9.
Acting Minister for Manpower, Mr. Gan Kim Yong, was guest-of-honour at the event, which was the first of its kind aimed at raising public awareness about environmental protection and energy conservation. It was jointly organised with the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the SouthWest Community Development Council (SWCDC).
A highlight of the event was the Let's Pedal Challenge for which ExxonMobil contributed $40,000 for 400 cyclists to power up parts of the tentage by cycling. In total, ExxonMobil contributed $50,000 to the SouthWest Environmental Fund. The money will be used to fund a Junior Environmental Ambassadors programme as well as Health programmes in the SouthWest district of Singapore.
Said Asia Pacific Manufacturing Planner Ong Puay Chong, who was the Organising Lead of the event: “This is a good community outreach programme. Throughout the day, some 12,000 people came by and gained a better understanding of what ExxonMobil does as a company towards Environmental Protection and promoting Responsible Care as a way of life. Mr. Gan, the guest-of-honour, was very encouraged and pleased with the efforts and initiatives we have in place.”
Singapore Chemical Plant Site Manager Derk Hartgerink, who represented ExxonMobil Chemical Management at the event also spent time interacting with the Minister and other guests, including SWCDC Mayor Dr. Amy Khor and NEA Chairman Ms. Chew Gek Khim.
