Singapore – May 3, 2009 –ExxonMobil announced today that its Singapore Chemical Plant (SCP) has commenced the shut-down of several operating units for planned maintenance.
The overall duration of this routine regularly-scheduled maintenance activity is expected to be about eight weeks.
“Shutting the units down provides an opportunity for detailed inspection of equipment normally in continuous operation, routine maintenance and installation of facility improvement projects,” said Mr Derk Hartgerink, SCP Plant Manager.
“Unit shutdowns such as these are infrequent, but necessary, to ensure continued safe and reliable operations. We have communicated the shutdown to our regular customers and have made plans to meet their product needs during this period.”
There may be some flaring when the units are being prepared for maintenance work and when the units are being prepared to start up again.
Flaring is an environmentally-responsible way to safely burn hydrocarbons that cannot be processed during a unit shutdown. This is necessary in order to make the equipment safe for personnel to work on it. Similarly, when restarting units, some flaring is required for safety reasons.
Mr Hartgerink said: “We understand that flaring may be a cause of concern for some members of the community. We sincerely regret any inconvenience the flaring will cause and we will make every reasonable effort to minimize the flaring. ExxonMobil has a strong commitment to safety, health and environment and we are committed to actions that protect the safety, health and the environment for our workers, their families and the people of Singapore.”
