SINGAPORE – Ahead of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula One™ driver Jenson Button today participated in a different kind of car race at an event celebrating ExxonMobil’s 120th anniversary in Singapore.
Button went head-to-head in a radio-controlled car race with more than 20 secondary students from five schools in the South West District, where ExxonMobil has strong community links. While his car today was on a smaller scale than his usual race vehicle, both require the same qualities of dexterity and coordination to execute skillful maneuvers on the track. The event also provided an opportunity for the students to share in ExxonMobil’s activities surrounding the Singapore Grand Prix, and to have a chance to get up close to Button, a Formula One world champion driver.
This year marks 120 years of ExxonMobil’s operations in Singapore. The company has grown from a kerosene trading house to a world-scale integrated refining and petrochemical hub for the region.
Matthew Aguiar, Chairman and Managing Director, ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, said: “We want to recognize the tremendous support of the Singapore community which we’ve grown with and has had a key part in our legacy of success throughout the years. We also want our strong history and legacy to continue for Singapore’s next generation of innovators, which is why we’ve invited students from the South West District to take part in today’s event with Jenson. We hope that the students here today will be inspired to dream big and go on to achieve their dreams. The students of today fuel our successes for tomorrow, both here in Singapore and around the world."
Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh said: “Vodafone McLaren Mercedes is delighted to be supporting Mobil 1 in Singapore as part of our preparations for this weekend’s Grand Prix, especially since we’re also celebrating our 50th anniversary this year. Our technology partnership with ExxonMobil is now in its 19th year and has made direct contributions to our Championship successes. Through Mobil 1’s sponsorship, the team has also been able to contribute to the development of top race car drivers like Jenson Button. It’s great for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and our drivers to be able to give something back to the local community at the races that we participate in."
